New Year, New Goals: Setting and Reaching Goals in 2024

by | Dec 4, 2023 | Life Coaching

With a new year comes new goals! Setting goals is a part of reaching new heights every day, every week, and every month. But there’s something different about the beginning of a new year. As 2024 approaches, we’ll celebrate wins and accomplishments, we’ll get new calendars, we’ll reflect on the past, and we’ll look forward to the future. So, let’s head into this new year with confidence knowing that we’ll reach our 2024 goals.

Seven Steps to Reaching your New Goals in 2024

While you still have time in 2023, set yourself up by creating new goals and an action plan to go with them. Here are seven steps to setting and reaching your goals in 2024!

Step 1– Dream big.

Dream bigger than ever before in 2024! We’re sure you’ve heard to keep your goals S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Bound), as you should. But when envisioning what your life looks like 5, 10, or 20 years down the road, it’s important to dream big first! The action plan will happen, but you’ve got to know where you’re going first.

Step 2 – Align your values.

Dreaming big begins with aligning your values with your vision. To accomplish this, you need to know what your values are. So, if you need help with that, head to this blog all about “Four Steps to Discovering Your Life Values.”

After you’ve done your “big dreaming” from step 1, take time to reflect on that vision to ensure that it aligns with your core values. Let’s say part of your big dream is to travel the world with your family. “Family” and “travel” are likely on your list of values. But what if “community service” is on your list as well? Here’s where you can decide where that fits in your future. Maybe you will find ways to give back to the communities you visit while traveling. Or potentially, you focus on serving your community when you’re not on your travels. Either way, aligning your values with your vision will ensure that you stay on the right track.

Step 3 – Start with the end in mind.

Now that your vision and values are in alignment, it’s time to get focused on the specific goals and actions that will get you to your desired outcome. This is where your S.M.A.R.T. goals start to come into play. It’s time to create goals that get you closer to your dreams and ambitions in life. Whether these are professional career goals, financial goals, physical health goals, etc., they all impact your future.

The purpose of starting with the end goal in mind isn’t to overwhelm you, but to set you up for success! You must know where you’re going before understanding the steps needed to get you there.

Step 4 – Make a plan.

It’s time for details! If one of your S.M.A.R.T. goals (from step 3) is to connect with “x” amount of people every month, take the number and break it down to the day. So, if you want to make a meaningful connection with 30 people, you’d make a plan to connect with at least one person a day.

Although this is a simple example, it works with any goal! Just be sure that your goals are measurable so that you know exactly the action steps to take to reach them.

Step 5 – Schedule it in.

After making a plan, take it one step further by scheduling it into your calendar or planner. If you need to connect with one person a day, there better be a spot on your calendar and to-do list to do exactly that.

This is the point when your big future vision feels less overwhelming to attain because you’ve broken it down into actionable goals.

Step 6 – Follow through.

Following through on your commitment (your plan) is the key to success. You must take action! This is why building your daily habits is so crucial. Without healthy work habits, your motivation will only take you so far. As John C. Maxwell© says:

“The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”

Step 7 – Incorporate accountability.

The last step is to set yourself up for success. You’ve already done a lot of work through steps 1-6 to help you with this, but building accountability systems will benefit you even more in the long run. Here are examples of ways to incorporate accountability:

  • Have an accountability partner to check in with.
  • Attend events to surround yourself with like-minded people.
  • Read books on mindset and personal growth.
  • Listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or motivational speakers.
  • Write down your goals in a planner, journal, or calendar, and schedule in your action items. (See step 5).
  • Create a dream or vision board

Do whatever you can to keep your eye on the prize!
